If you want to experience an authentic Roman meal at prices that are extremely reasonable in a warm and cozy atmosphere, then Il Miraggio is the place for you. Rome, like so many big cities, is full of tourist traps and sometimes it is not so easy to figure out where you can find really good traditional food at prices that are easy on the purse strings. Il Miraggio, in my opinion, is a must when in Rome and it is just steps away from the hip and trendy neighborhood of Trastevere.
Il Miraggio is one of those places where you feel like you are at home…eating on the proverbial checkered tablecloth with cloves of garlic hanging from the rafters. You think it would feel kitchy, but it feels comfortable and unpretentious. On any given day you can find a famous journalist or a large Italian family gathering for an afternoon meal. The restaurant is always full of locals and repeat customers (including my husband and I) and Franco, the owner, always makes the rounds to talk to everyone and the service is always warm and friendly.
The menu is simple…hearty Roman food and it’s all delicious. You can’t really go wrong, with what you order, but the pasta dishes are especially delectable. All of the usual suspects are on the menu; cacio e pepe, rigatoni alla Norma (pasta with a tomatoey eggplant sauce), fettucini al carbonara, or bucatini alla amatriciana…and the list goes on.
My preference is spaghetti with clams partly because I adore it and partly out of tradition as my husband took me here on one of our first dates and this is what he ordered for us.They also have pizza if you have a hankering for it…made in house in their wood fired oven. And definitely don’t forget to leave room for dessert. My hands down favorite is the homemade tiramisu.…or zoccolette alle Nutella…fried dough with warm Nutella sauce drizzled on top…pure bliss! My advice is to get both and share…or not! 😉 So if you are in Rome, I would definitely recommend a visit to Il Miraggio.
